I do not know you. I only know snippets of your story, not nearly enough thread to stitch the whole picture of you together. I do not know your name or your sexual orientation or your race or what you’ve wished for each year on your birthday since you turned six. All I know is what has happened to you, and that those events do not define you.

But I would like to apologize for what you’ve been through.

I am sorry that you were attacked that night, that you were raped by those two boys who call themselves men, and that their friends filmed you and took pictures of you and made jokes about a girl who was still living, breathing, fighting.

I am sorry that you had to find out about your rape, about something so personal and private and horrific, through the internet the day after. I cannot imagine how earth shattering and heart breaking it must have been to realize that not only was your world invaded by unwelcome strangers, but that everyone else knew before you had even woken up, and that no one had tried to stop it.

I am sorry that your two best friends, who you probably shared all your secrets with while clad in pajamas and eating Ben & Jerry’s and gushing about who the cutest boys were, turned against you in court. Testified that you are “attention seeking” in front of your face as you sat there, wondering why friends can so quickly turn into strangers.

I am sorry that the boys’ defense attorneys attempted to argue that your silence was enough of a consent to justify their actions, that the attorneys tried to define at which stage of drunk rape is acceptable.

I am sorry that the three reporters on CNN spent copious amounts of time sympathizing with your attackers, but neglected to mention the psychological torture that you have undergone and will most likely continue to undergo as you attempt to regrow yourself after this.

I am sorry on behalf of the world, because you should not have to live in a culture where rape is normal and the victims are found guilty. You should not have to justify your claims, which were backed up by video evidence, because you were drinking or your skirt wasn’t long enough or you were leading them on. None of those are excuses for rape. Nothing is an excuse for rape.

You do not know me, but I am sorry. I wish I could be there to hold you hand and comfort you through the darkening night to the dawn of a new age. I wish I could be there to hold you while the darkness is slowly but surely invaded by the warm rays of a new day, a new hope, a new future.
